Yarm School, in partnership with North East STEM Foundation (NESF), has hosted an informative and exciting day for children from primary schools across the region to learn more about STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers. Leading local and national employers attended, highlighting STEM career opportunities in sectors including construction, engineering, healthcare and manufacturing.
From chemical testing and infrastructure planning to robotics, sustainability and recruitment in STEM fields, the day created curiosity, developed skills and presented opportunities for exciting future careers.
Organisations attending including Tracerco, Meldrum Group, Jacobs, MGL Group, Sir Robert McAlpine, Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies, SRG Talent, Tekmar and Spark Tees Valley, each delivering engaging workshops and laying on practical challenges that gave students a taste of cutting-edge industries and professional opportunities. In addition, Tony Swanwick, formerly of BAE Systems shared his professional knowledge from 35 years’ experience as an electronics engineer spanning telecoms to military vehicles.
The initiative at Yarm School reflects a growing collaboration between education and industry to prepare the next generation of innovators, engineers, and scientists by exposing them to real workplace scenarios, current employees, tools, and expertise.
Dave Meldrum, Trustee at NESF, said: “This event, has provided a fantastic opportunity to bring STEM to life for so many young people. Thanks to the support of leading employers, the pupils from across the region were able to see STEM put into practice, and where skills can be applied for exciting and rewarding careers.”
Dr Huw Williams, Headmaster of Yarm School, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome so many schools and organisations to Yarm School to take part in the STEM partnership day. These events are brilliant opportunities to allow pupils to explore, discover and be inspired. They also build confidence, skills and ambition for the next generation of STEM professionals.”
